What is Testosterone Cypionate?

Testosterone cypionate, is an androgen also called an anabolic steroid medication that’s used mainly for the treatment of low testosterone levels in men, (also known as Low T,) Testosterone cypionate injections are typically given via an intramuscular injection once weekly, depending on physician protocol and patient need.  Often variations in prescription concentration and type of testosterone used can change the need for more or less frequent injections. Some forms of testosterone can be used transdermal, such as a gel or cream-based options, which is usually prescribed for use once or twice daily.

Like all medications there are both the potential of positive benefits as well as potential risks, so it’s important to be under the care of an experienced physician to learn if you qualify for hormone therapy or if there are other underlying medical conditions which may be affecting your health. Testosterone cypionate is one of many types of testosterone esters available and because of its slow release, and long-lasting effect in the body, a popular choice for men on TRT. Because of this, it is considered to be a natural and bioidentical form of testosterone and is a popular choice for physicians when choosing the right medication for their patients who are on testosterone replacement therapy. The main difference between esters is the rate at which the testosterone will be absorbed and enter the bloodstream after an injection. A slower releasing ester can mean fewer testosterone injections a year. Take for example, Testosterone Propionate, is a faster acting ester, so its rarely used for Testosterone Replacement Therapy as it would require more frequent injections. The half-life of testosterone cypionate is approximately 7 days which makes it preferable for maintaining a simple schedule, easy to follow for patients on TRT. Currently it is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of primary or hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.
