Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Restoration: An OverView To How PRP Can Help ReGrow Hair.

At NovaGenix, we’ve been providing patients PRP therapy asa proactive therapeutic option for men and women experiencing hair loss. PRP isan exciting non-surgical hair restoration option for patients who needstimulation of hair growth for hair loss conditions.

Recent scientific studies within the medicalcommunity and advancements in technology have provided medical professionalswith new understandings of wound and tissue healing. Because of this recentscientific research, we can recognize PRP as an all-natural autologous medicalprocedure conducted by physicians offices and clinics for hair stimulation aswell as that of the scalp and skin. The results have been amazing and both menand women in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s are seeing results that they neverimagined possible.

HOW DOES PRP WORK?

Contained within the human blood ismesenchymal stem cells, and autologous blood products which has essential andspecific growth factors that assist in tissue regeneration and healing. Medicalliterature and published studies from both Europe and the United States confirmthe overall safety and effectiveness of PRP therapy. PRP has been used as amedial adjunct therapy for over twenty years for skin and wound healing. It’sestablished itself to be effective as a medical treatment modality in thespecialty fields of oral surgery, neurosurgery, plastic and cosmetic surgery,sports medicine and orthopedics. It’s been used extensively in thesespecialties for the last twenty years with universally positive success ratesand outcomes. For PRP use in hair restoration, evidence has supported thetherapy as a very promising treatment option for the promotion of hair growth.It should be noted that PRP is in the initial stages of scientific research inhair restoration, and not meant to replace current FDA approved, however it isa promising non-surgical therapeutic option for those patients with hair lossand has shown some amazing results thus far.

HOW DO YOU PERFORM PRP FOR HAIRLOSS?

Blood is drawn in our office the same way aswhen you’re getting routine blood work at your primary care provider. The bloodis then spun in a high-speed centrifuge and the Platelet Rich Plasma isseparated into a high concentration. The PRP is then separated and removed fromthe rest of the blood sample. In PRP, the platelets are concentrated to 3Xtheir normal blood values. The system eliminates granulocytes which are cellsthat impede in the process of tissue regeneration and wound healing. The highlyconcentrated platelet rich plasma (PRP) is then injected into the scalp. Thepatient feels no pain during the injections due to a local anesthesia beingutilized on the scalp. Afterwards, the patient’s hair is cleaned and thepatient can drive home with no side effects. PRP contains several growthfactors which stimulate hair follicle growth. PRP can be used preoperatively,intraoperatively, or post operatively. Many patients have chosen to have PRPperformed every three (3) to four (4) months as early data suggests regular orsemiannual PRP treatments that may stimulate hair growth.

THE SCIENCE OF PRP

Platelets which are contained in the PRP, arewhat scientists believe to theoretically cause growth of the hair folliclesthrough the stimulation of stem cells and other cells within themicroenvironment of the hair follicles. These cells promote healing, and oftenaccelerates the rate and total degree of tissue healing and regeneration,response to injury, and the formation of new growth on a cellular level. Theprimary purpose of using PRP in hair restoration is to stimulate inactive ornewly implanted hair follicles into an active growth phase.

Inside the Platelets there’s severalintracellular structures like glycogen, lysosomes and alpha granules. Thesegranules within the PRP contain clotting and growth factors that are eventuallyreleased during the healing and repair process.

PRP specific cells that causeshair growth include:

  •          Platelet-Derived Growth Factor (PDGF)—promotes blood vessel growth, cellreplication, skin formation;
  •         Transforming Growth-Factor-Beta (TGF-b)—promotes growth of matrix betweencells, bone metabolism;
  •         Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF)—promotes blood vessel formation;
  •         Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF)—promotes cell growth anddifferentiation, blood vessel formation, collagen formation;
  •         Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 (FGF-2)—promotes growth of specialized cellsand blood vessel formation;
  •      Insulin Like Growth Factor - (IGF)—a regulator of normal physiology innearly every type of cell in the body

At the end of the day, PRP for hairrestoration offers the best chance for hair growth for patients who aren’t goodcandidates for surgery or those men and women who want a more aggressivenonsurgical approach to treatment for their hair loss. If you need hairstimulation, NovaGenix will be able to meet your needs. Results will sometimesvary from patient to patients, but thus far, PRP has been shown to offer a realsolution and hope to men who wish to restore their hair and youthfulappearance.

This subsequent lab panel is necessary for males undergoing Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) through NovaGenix Health and Wellness. It allows physicians to assess the patient's response to prescribed medications, covering sex hormone levels, thyroid function, adrenal health, hematocrit, and liver and kidney function. The panel includes tests such as:

  • Complete Blood Count
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
  • Testosterone (Free and Total)
  • Estradiol Sensitive
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
  • Prostate Specific Antigen

Each test serves a specific purpose in monitoring overall health and treatment effectiveness. When required, Dr Mackey may require LH and FSH (Luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone) SHBG (Sex hormone binding globulin) or any other tests which may be important for your health and optimizing your hormones.

The Comprehensive Hormone and Wellness Panel for Women offers a foundational assessment of sex hormones, thyroid function, adrenal health, metabolic activity, and overall well-being. This panel serves as a diagnostic tool for identifying testosterone and estrogen deficiencies, assessing health risks, and detecting potential thyroid issues before considering hormone replacement therapy. Additionally, it includes insights into hematocrit (red blood cell volume), as well as liver and kidney function. The panel encompasses various tests such as:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC)
  • Complete Metabolic Panel
  • Testosterone (free and total)
  • Estradiol
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
  • Progesterone

When indicated, Dr. Mackey may require additional tests such as Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), and IGF-1 and Cortisol.
