What can I do to raise my Testosterone?

Part 1 on "ways to increase your testosterone levels."

Testosterone is the main sex hormone for men. It’s an anabolic steroid hormone that men produce in their testes, and in smaller amounts in the adrenal glands as well. The biology behind testosterone production is complex and each individual will have variations because of genetic factors, lifestyle, age, activity levels, health status, nutritional intake and environment. Interestingly, even women produce testosterone naturally, just in significantly lower levels then males obviously. Testosterone is made from cholesterol and there is both Total testosterone and Free testosterone levels that we focus on. The Serum or Total T levels show the total amount of testosterone, where the Free measures the actual amount that isn’t bound to either SHBG (Sex Hormone Binding Globulin) or Albumin (a protein produced in the Liver). The Hypothalamus in our brain registers a need for testosterone and releases GRH or Gonadotropin-releasing-hormonewhich then gets detected by our pituitary gland. The pituitary gland begins to release both FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone) and LH (Luteinizing Hormone) which both travel to the testes through the blood stream. The FSH signals the testes to produce more sperm cells and the LH tells them to start making more testosterone. Within the testes the Leydig cells convert cholesterol into testosterone and releases it back into the bloodstream. It is then almost immediately bound to both SHBG and albumin which, in essence, makes it useless for the purposes men like having testosterone for. Things like increased energy, libido, muscle development, mood regulation etc.. The portion that is available circulates through our bodies and then is detected by the hypothalamus which then signals the pituitary to stop releasing FSH and LH and the cycle continues until levels drop enough to restart the process. Testosterone plays a key role during puberty in the development and growth of a male’s reproductive tissues like their prostate testes and penis. It also promotes secondary male sexual characteristics like the deepening of their voices, a growth spurt, growth of body hair, increased bone mass and density and greater lean muscle development. It’s also the force behind their sex drive.

One of the best things that anyone can do for their health is to exercise. It helps prevent a substantial number of lifestyle related conditions and diseases and has also been clinically proven to boost your testosterone levels. In an article published in the urology times, they say studies and research from Tsukuba University in Japan 3a., showed that men who were overweight and obese that took part in a 12-week aerobic exercise program showed significantly higher testosterone levels as a result of their working out. What can be difficult for many people, is that obesity lowers testosterone levels and makes it more likely that a man will gain even more weight and be more lethargic and less likely to engage in a fitness and exercise program which only increases the weight gain and continues to lower their hormone levels. But those individuals that do exercise, will see an increase in their testosterone level and thus reverse the trend, increase energy and decrease body fat which will cause an overall increase in T levels and improvement in health. It also shows that in older men exercise will increase not just testosterone levels, but overall fitness and even their reaction times as well. It helps men live better and healthier for longer. For increasing testosterone levels it’s been shown that an exercise routine will have an even greater impact than diet alone in obese man.

This subsequent lab panel is necessary for males undergoing Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) through NovaGenix Health and Wellness. It allows physicians to assess the patient's response to prescribed medications, covering sex hormone levels, thyroid function, adrenal health, hematocrit, and liver and kidney function. The panel includes tests such as:

  • Complete Blood Count
  • Comprehensive Metabolic Panel
  • Testosterone (Free and Total)
  • Estradiol Sensitive
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone
  • Prostate Specific Antigen

Each test serves a specific purpose in monitoring overall health and treatment effectiveness. When required, Dr Mackey may require LH and FSH (Luteinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone) SHBG (Sex hormone binding globulin) or any other tests which may be important for your health and optimizing your hormones.

The Comprehensive Hormone and Wellness Panel for Women offers a foundational assessment of sex hormones, thyroid function, adrenal health, metabolic activity, and overall well-being. This panel serves as a diagnostic tool for identifying testosterone and estrogen deficiencies, assessing health risks, and detecting potential thyroid issues before considering hormone replacement therapy. Additionally, it includes insights into hematocrit (red blood cell volume), as well as liver and kidney function. The panel encompasses various tests such as:

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC)
  • Complete Metabolic Panel
  • Testosterone (free and total)
  • Estradiol
  • Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
  • Progesterone

When indicated, Dr. Mackey may require additional tests such as Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), and IGF-1 and Cortisol.
